The Ryeland lamb is exceptional, the meat has a fine texture, it is sweet and the fat is succulent, it melts away in the mouth. We get such great feedback from people who have tried our Ryeland lamb. It is the pastures they graze, the salad bar of native grasses and it is the breed.
Ryelands are a heritage breed with not many breeders in Australia. Their purpose was surpassed by finer wool breeds such as merinos, which saw them fall out a favour in the Australia landscape. Ironically Ryeland's were considered to be producers of fine wool in the UK, although the main purpose of a Ryeland was and is a meat breed sheep.
They are thrifty breed, seemingly getting fat on air. Our Ryeland rams need to be kept in a "skinny paddock", fat boys tend to find "their job" aka sperm delivery a bit difficult when the verandah is on the larger side. Its this fat that that makes the dry aged mutton so good.
Ryeland's are a medium sized plump sheep, they have black hooves which makes them less susceptible to foot rot conditions and have black pigment around their eyes and their nose making them less prone to sunburn. The down side, they can at times be temperamental mums, although our breeding program is gradually removing these ewes from our flock.
